Dental X-rays

Your doctor will use dental x-rays as a necessary diagnostic too to find out valuable information that doesn’t come to light during a normal dental exam. Armed with this information, your dentist is able to work on your individual treatment plan.

At US Dental Care, we are fortunate to have a CAT Scan machine - ensuring our patients have only minimum exposure to radiation.

The x-ray will show up:

  • Decay between the teeth
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Bone loss
  • Malign and benign tumours
  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Poor tooth and root positions
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line

Are dental x-rays safe?

In our environment, we are actually exposed to natural radiation every day. The amount of radiation exposure from a full series of dental x-rays is equal to what a typical person receives in one day from natural sources. Dental x-rays are considered safe and dentists do take precautions - these include using lead aprons to protect the body as well as using super fast film to reduce exposure time of each x-ray.

How often should dental x-rays be taken?

Obviously, this depends on your individual health needs - your doctor will discuss your requirements when developing your treatment plan. It is normal that new patients should have a full series of x-rays which can be sufficient for three to five years. When you go for a check up, your doctor may ask you to have a ‘bitewing x-ray, which will detect any new dental problems.

I-CAT Scans

A Cat scan is an X-ray procedure that uses many different X-ray images with the help of computers to take 3D views of internal organs and structures within the body.

Many dentists are now using i-CAT scans to give them more detailed information about the mouth and skull. The dentist sees a clear picture of the bone structure, bone density, tissues and nerves can be viewed clearly.

US Dental are pleased to be able to offer i-CAT scans to our patients.

i-CAT scans can be completed in just 30 seconds! This dramatically reduces the amount of radiation exposed to the patient in comparison with a regular X-rays.

i-CAT scans have greatly reduced the time required to perform dental implant treatment. Your dentist is able to magnify specific areas of the face and jaw meaning diagnosis and treatment is much faster.

Just from an i-CAT scan, your dentist will be able to:

  • See impacted teeth and position of each tooth
  • Measure exact size of implant required and the best angle of location
  • Identify where nerves are located
  • Diagnose tumours and disease in early stages

You will be pleased to know that when you have an i-CAT scan, you just need to sit comfortably on a seat and the i-CAT scan is so fast that it means diagnosis and treatment is quicker and more accurate thus saving you time and money.
